Modeling addresses key reservoir characterization risk
No-compromise 3D Seismic Modeling lets you accurately predict what aspects of your reservoir you can resolve with seismic data and what aspects you can't resolve. Moreover, modeling can tell you how subtle features of your reservoir will appear in your seismic image.
An interesting paper by Thore shows how conventional 1D stratigraphic modeling does not accurately predict the seismic image for his reservoir. His main results, reproduced below, show how one can model a reservoir starting from a geo-cellular model. His comparison of 1D stratigraphic modeling using the Zoeppritz method and FD modeling show surprising differences, even though time migration was used. The FD modeling is generally considered to be more accurate.
An presentation by Delprat-Jannaud and Lailly indicates that a key cause of error in 1D stratigraphic modeling is that it usually doesn't include interbed multiples. FD modeling does include the interbed multiples.
Examples of other reservoir models for FD modeling are shown here using EarthVision by Dynamic Graphics.
