Modeling addresses key acquisition risk

The modeling gives you confidence that a new seismic survey will adequately resolve your key geologic objectives before you do your acquisition. Some companies have used this approach to justify a more expensive acquisition program. Modeling can also help you determine the key acquisition parameters.

The best example of this may be Carl Regone's work to justify wide azimuth acquisition for sub-salt imaging. His main results are reproduced below. The Wide Azimuth acquisition is considerably more expensive, but Carl used these modeling results to convince BP management that this acquisition is worthwhile. The real data results reflected these modeled results. Now, many other companies are also doing wide azimuth acquisition.

On the left is the depth slice image of a sub-salt reservoir produced with modeling conventional narrow azimuth marine streamer data. The image is severely contaminated with multiples and shadow zones. On the right is the same image produced with modeling wide azimuth data. The image is significantly improved.
